The purpose of this study was to evaluate the predictive validity of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) for a suicide attempt and depressed mood in patients with a major depressive episode. Subjects were 132 consecutive inpatients with a DSM-III diagnosis of major depression who were admitted for inpatient psychiatric care. Two raters conducted an interview and administered the BDI to all subjects. Information on suicide attempts during the index hospitalization was also collected. The subjects' current depression and dysphoric mood were measured through self-ratings on the BDI. As part of the psychiatric interview, the subjects' suicidal ideation was measured using the Brief Scale of Suicidality. Subjects who had attempted suicide during the index hospitalization had higher BDI scores and more severe depression and dysphoric mood than subjects who had not attempted suicide. The BDI predicted a suicide attempt independent of dysphoric mood and suicidal ideation. The BDI predicted depressed mood independent of suicidal ideation and a suicide attempt. The BDI correlated with dysphoric mood and suicidal ideation. The BDI was a more powerful predictor of depressed mood and suicidal ideation than a brief measure of suicidality.Atrioventricular nodal tachycardia in children: clinical and electrophysiologic features. The clinical and electrophysiologic characteristics of atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia in children are reviewed. Over a 4-year period, 14 children with a diagnosis of atrioventricular nodal reentrant tachycardia were seen at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. Their ages ranged from 8 days to 16 years (mean 5.8 years). None of the patients had a history of prior cardiac surgery or congestive heart failure. The arrhythmia was inducible in all patients, and sustained in 12 of them. P waves were invariably seen in lead V1 and were variable in lead V6. In the right anterior ob be359ba680
